Gemini can now edit the Doc inside the chat. The chat is not a desk.
What happened
Thursday, October 29, Google posted that the Gemini app can now generate, preview, and edit files right in the chat. That includes PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code. You can expand a file to full screen and type, or highlight a chunk and ask Gemini to change it.
PDF preview and editing work on web and mobile. The other formats are web only for now. Google says this is available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available.
Gemini could already generate and download files earlier this year. The new bit is you no longer have to leave the chat to tweak them. The Gemini bar inside Google Docs is a different pile.
Why it matters
The hype sentence is “stop bouncing between Gemini and Docs.” The true sentence is Gemini offered to be the word processor.
That can be useful. A study guide from notes. A table that becomes a chart. Highlight, ask, done.
I do not like treating the chat as a private desk. Highlighting a paragraph sends that text back to Gemini to rewrite. A generated file that lives in the chat is still a Gemini file. Download it if you need a copy you can actually own.
If you do not use Gemini, this is not your errand.
What I'd actually do
Today, if you use Gemini:
Do not upload a real lease, tax return, medical PDF, or work contract and ask Gemini to “just tweak a paragraph.” Generate a junk one-pager if you want to see the highlight-to-edit button. Then download anything you actually need, and finish it in Docs or Word.
If a file preview pops up in the chat, that is an editor now, not a screenshot. Highlighting is a rewrite request.
If you do not use Gemini, sit down.
How it works
Gemini generates the file in the chat. Full screen for typing. Highlight to ask questions or have Gemini change text or visuals. PDFs on phone and computer. Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT, and code on the web.
What this is not
Google Docs dying. Proof Gemini already has your Drive. The Gemini sidebar inside Workspace apps. A ChatGPT feature. A reason to smash the chatbot.
What not to do
Do not treat in-chat editing as “the file stayed on my computer.” Do not highlight a salary table and ask it to “make the numbers nicer.” Do not confuse a Gemini preview with a saved Drive file until you download it or send it to Docs.
The sticky-note version: if Gemini shows a file you can highlight, that is an editor. The chat is not a filing cabinet.
