The Browser Company is turning Arc off on December 22. The bookmarks do not get a forwarding address unless you pack them.
What happened
Thursday, October 22, The Browser Company posted a farewell on arc.net. Arc sunsets on December 22, 2026.
New Arc accounts already cannot be created. On November 23, Arc Search on iOS and Android loses Browse for Me and the other AI features, and you can no longer sign in or sync tabs. On December 22, Arc on macOS and Windows stops working. Accounts deactivate. Personal data is deleted within 30 days. Android Arc Search comes off the Play Store.
The replacement they want is Dia, their AI browser. They say the sidebar, Spaces (now Profiles), pinned tabs, folders, passwords, history, and extensions can import in a few clicks. They say the browser features are free and the AI is optional.
Friday, October 23, The Register reported the shutdown.
Why it matters
If Arc is still the window you actually use, two months is not forever. Passwords, Spaces, and the pile of tabs you meant to read are sitting in a house with a demolition date.
The hype sentence is “come to Dia.” The true sentence is export first, then decide.
You do not have to follow them into an AI-native browser because they turned the old one off. Dia might be the right next house. It is not the only one. Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Zen still exist, and they will still exist in December.
If you never used Arc, this is not your errand.
What I'd actually do
Today, if you still open Arc, export.
On a Mac: Arc → Settings → Advanced → Export Data. On Windows: Ctrl+, → Advanced → Export Data. Save the file somewhere that is not the Downloads pile.
On the phone, Arc Search has an export too: Settings → Export Data (Android) or Export Open Tabs (iOS). November 23 is when sign-in and tab sync go dark on mobile. Do not wait for that popup.
Then pick a next browser on purpose. Dia if you want the same sidebar and you are fine with an AI-native successor. Something else if you just wanted a browser. You can import into Dia later. You cannot un-delete December.
If you never used Arc, sit down.
How it works
October 22 closed new accounts. November 23 turns off the phone AI and the sync. December 22 turns off the desktop app and starts the 30-day delete clock. The latest Arc build added the export button for this.
What this is not
Chrome dying. A virus. A reason to panic if Arc is not on your dock.
What not to do
Do not wait until December 21. Do not treat a Dia import as the only copy. Do not skip the export because you “might” switch later. Do not assume Arc Search on the phone will keep your tabs after November 23.
The sticky-note version: if Arc still has your life in the sidebar, copy it out today.
